What Is Mega-Sel?
Mega-Sel is a unique Selenium and Vitamin E product vital to the health and performance of your horse. Its patented, liquid formula, provides Selenium and Vitamin E in a palatable form which is readily consumed and utilized by the horse. Powdered supplements are safe, but they may settle out of the grain, not to be consumed at all. Injectables, although effective, have potentially dangerous side effects (anaphylactoid reactions). Mega-Sel offers you both safety and effectiveness.

Why Does Your Horse Need Mega-Sel?
It has been proven conclusively that Selenium and Vitamin E are essential nutrients in your horse's diet affecting both health and performance. Selenium is a trace mineral essential to life and proper nutrition. Coupled with Vitamin E, Selenium is essential for cell membrane integrity and proper cell metabolism. Selenium supplementation improves breeding efficiency. Brood mares need Selenium to maintain their health and assure proper development of the foal. Selenium is vital to foals and the rapidly growing young horse to achieve proper muscle, bone, and cartilage development. Horses in training need increased levels of Selenium and Vitamin E to maintain proper cell metabolism to minimize the deleterious effects associated with the stress of hard work. Whether to sustain life, guarantee good health, improve the general condition of your horse, or to assure peak performance, Mega-Sel aids proper nutrition.

Proper nutrition is the basis for peak performance. Extensive field testing and research has indicated that higher levels of Selenium are associated with improved performance. It has been proven that Mega-Sel is capable of safely raising Selenium to levels associated with peak performance.

Is Mega-Sel Necessary?
Definitely. Most feeds and forages do not contain adequate amounts of Selenium to ensure good equine health and performance. Even areas thought to be Selenium sufficient often receive feeds grown in deficient areas. Supplementation is therefore a must in most geographic areas.

The need for additional Selenium increases for horses in training. Training may cause muscle fatigue which leads to ligament and joint injuries. Veterinarians agree that there is often permanent muscle damage in horses that have experienced problems such as myositis and tying-up. Your horse(s) should be on a continuous Mega-Sel program to adequately supply Selenium and assure peak performance.

Is Your Horse Deficient?
Diagnosis may not always be obvious. Your horse(s) could be deficient without you knowing it. While horses that are deficient show obvious signs such as tying-up, muscle soreness, high SGOT (AST), poor hair coat and dry, brittle feet, marginally deficient animals are often hard to diagnose. Less than optimal levels yet not severely deficient may result in more subtle symptoms such as decreased stamina or energy level.

Selenium testing is available through some laboratories. Normal or average levels for most labs, however, are representative of deficient areas. In most cases, if your horse falls within the normal range it's Selenium level is too low. Many veterinarians recommend serum Selenium levels from 180-210 ng/ml for maximum health and performance. Mega-Sel is capable of achieving these levels safely. Mega-Sel is currently used by many equine veterinarians both as a safe alternative to injectables and as an effective substitute for Selenium supplements.

Mega-Sel...The Safe, Effective Alternative

A Safe Alternative to Injectables...
Typically, feed supplements do not provide Selenium at levels to guarantee peak performance. Potentially dangerous Selenium/Vitamin E injectables have been used to treat Selenium deficiency problems associated with poor performance (myositis, tying-up syndrome, etc). A Mega-Sel program provides a natural daily dose of Selenium capable of raising Selenium to levels necessary for the replacement of periodic injections. Top-dressed, Mega-Sel maintains a healthy level of Selenium without subjecting the horse to the up and down spikes of Selenium which occur through injections. The recommended dosages ensure that your horse safely receives the correct amount of Selenium needed for optimum performance.

A Better Alternative to Selenium Supplements
A Mega-Sel program provides a very palatable source of Selenium specially formulated to provide increased absorption and therefore greater utilization by your horse(s). Mega-Sel can be top-dressed on feed as part of your daily routine. As a liquid, Mega-Sel adheres to your horses' grain so it is not lost at the bottom of the feed tub or nudged aside by finicky eaters. With Mega-Sel you know exactly how much Selenium your horse is consuming; unlike feed mill mixed Selenium which varies with the amount of grain fed.

Effectiveness
The Mega-Sel formula has been field tested on horses for over three (3) years. Mega-Sel's effectiveness has been demonstrated through testing and by performance testimonials from equine veterinarians, trainers, and owners.

Safety
Mega-Sel is a highly palatable liquid which is readily consumed when mixed with dry or sweet feed. Top-dressed, Mega-Sel avoids the possible dangers associated with injectables while still providing adequate levels of Selenium for proper nutrition and optimum performance.

Although Selenium may be toxic if fed or administered in excess, the feeding directions provided with Mega-Sel assure your horse of safely receiving the proper level of Selenium need for maximum performance.

Field Testing

Following are the results of field testing to determine the absorption of Mega-Sel Equine Selenium and Vitamin E Compound in horses.

Baseline tests were secured prior to administration of a Mega-Sel program.  Each horse used in the test had been fed grain with feed-mill mixed selenium prior to the baseline test.  Four of the 23 horses tested had been receiving additional powdered supplementation prior to administration of the Mega-Sel program.  Powdered selenium supplementation was discontinued upon addition of Mega-Sel to diets.

Thirty days subsequent to the baseline tests, blood samples were drawn and submitted for analysis by technicians at Michigan State University's Animal Health Diagnostic Laboratory in East Lansing, Michigan. The results are graphed herein and show excellent absorption rates for Mega-Sel when supplemented to equine diets.

Veterinarians, owners and trainers recognized many benefits from the increase in selenium level, including: Reduced muscle soreness, alleviation of tying-up syndrome, lower SGOT, greater stamina, more energy and willing attitude, improved coat and hoof condition, etc. No deleterious side effects were seen.

Note: The values shown on the graph represent average Serum Selenium levels. Individual animals may be higher or lower.
